Nine Gaylord students spent a week reporting from Minneapolis’ George Floyd Square and, then, a week in Tulsa’s Greenwood District seeking the community stories often overlooked by journalists. Despite being 700 miles apart, these neighborhoods share a historical figure and similar stories of resilience against decades of oppression.
The multimedia stories these Gaylord News reporters produced are organized into four categories. Voices of the Past delves into the historical connections that bind these communities, like the story of A. B. Cassius, an Oklahoma-born man who revitalized South Minneapolis in the mid-20th century. Voices Now highlights the people, organizations, and issues driving change today. Voices Visualized is the photo gallery for the project. The Voices Podcast brings you in-depth discussions with the people on the front lines of advocacy, protest and art.
We are grateful to the Agape Movement in Minneapolis and the Black Wall Street Times in Tulsa for their guidance and commitment to this project. In particular, we thank Brigette Stewart, Steve Floyd, Marquise Brown from Agape – our home away from home. KingDemetrius Penndelton who provided us podcast space in his Listen Media Gallery. In Tulsa, Eddie Washington and Nehemia Frank were instrumental in connecting us to descendants of the massacre and sponsored our working space at Atento Capital.
