OU’s Fitness and Recreation launched a new app to help prevent fitness classes from becoming overbooked and is planning to move all of its fitness classes to registration only.
The fitness classes are first come first serve, however, OU students and faculty are turned away if a class runs out of equipment and space. To negate this issue, the app will let OU students and faculty reserve a spot in the class they want to take.
The Fitness and Recreation facilities at OU include Sarkey’s Fitness Center and the Murray Case Sells Swim Complex, which are used for intramural sports and fitness classes. According to the Fitness and Recreation 2016-2017 annual report, there are “nearly 70 classes taught throughout the week.”
Despite the abundance of classes offered, some of the classes have limited equipment and space, especially the cycling classes.
“Unfortunately, there would be people coming in one or two minutes before class or maybe right at class time, and there were no bikes left,” said Renee Williams, a Fitness and Recreation cycling instructor. “So, in that situation, it’s really hard because they’re ready to work out.”
Currently, the only classes that are registration only are the F45 program classes, which is a new group-training program that “centers on functional training and developing the muscle groups of the body in order to perform better in all aspects of daily life,” according to the Fitness and Recreation website.
However, Fitness and Recreation will slowly continue to move all of its fitness classes to registration only through the app throughout the rest of the year.
